You don’t need to be some huge spectacular amazing artist to BEFRIEND A POPULAR ARTIST, that is an arbitrary wall put up by people with an inferiority complex. And you know what else helped his case? He treated the “popular” artists like HUMAN BEINGS instead of untouchable god figures. Let me ask, why exactly do you want to be friends with these artists?
